Chelsea for Keynote?

Ugh… The idea that Obama ought to reward the Clintons for the campaign that they’ve run by giving their daughter the most visible speech at the convention is just revolting. Overall, I thought Kerry ran a pretty good convention schedule. Not a good convention mind you, given that he muzzled any and all attacks on George Bush and focused the whole event on his military service, as opposed to a platform or an affirmative reason to elect him. But his speaking schedule was right on, with Bill Clinton the first night, providing a big name, Obama’s electrifying speech the second and then the VP and Presidential nominees.

Obama should more or less follow that schedule. Maybe don’t give Bill a keynote, but replace him with a prominent Republican like Chuck Hagel or Colin Powell instead. But Obama should go out of his way to give a young, rising star a prime time speaking slot, like he and Harold Ford got the last two times around. He could do a lot worse than some of the future female presidential prospects I mentioned last night. Chelsea certainly can address the convention if she wants. But to give her a keynote slot would be ludicrous.
